Bull elk are one of the most romantic species in North America. I
will always get goose bumps when I hear elk bugles echoing in the valleys or
canyons. When I was a kid my dad would go elk hunting. I would dream of bears
and wolves and all the critters a little one could think of. I always wanted to
go with him but hunting was only for the older guys. I would eagerly anticipate
his coming home and would greet him with hugs and cheer when he would get back.
Then he would divulge the stories of the hunt. We all eagerly waited to hear
every next word. He would take us on the rivers in the winters and summers to
fish and hunt from early childhood. Well needless to say, that led up to a love
of Nature that would stem to over 45 years and counting. I have much learned
that there is a beauty in this thing called nature that surpasses sometimes a
need. I can truly say that I have gained a respect for it beyond anything that I
thought it could be. Filming it preserves it without taking away anything and
that is my Zen. I have always tried to instill in my family a love of nature so
they understand the beauty and preciousness of an ecosystem. These elk are very
much part of this environment and a good indicator of the health of the
ecosystem. This is a huge matriarch bull elk that I waited for over fifteen
years to encounter. It comes around in usually ten to twenty years when all of
your hard work and patience pay off, when you get to realize and capture that
long awaited shot of wonder and mystique, and know that it will always be
extremely special when you get to see and feel the essence of – “Winters’
Majesty”
I hope that you love this awesome gift of -
